It is now almost 100 years since the supposedly unsinkable White Star liner Titanic sank beneath the waves and into the history books. In the years that followed that night to remember in April 1912 much has been written about the ship and the tragic loss of life that occurred following its collision with an iceberg during its maiden voyage to New York, but still the Titanic continues to fascinate. In film, too, the story of the sinking has been told or reinterpreted on several occasions – from A Night to Remember, based on Walter Lord’s pioneering history of the sinking, through Raise the Titanic, Sir Lew Grade’s costly film about an attempted salvage operation, and, most recently James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio. With the discovery of the wreck, a whole new industry has been spawned with film crews recording the ship’s remains and tours down to view it.
